The Baronette Renaissance Detroit-Novi
Don’t leave your leadership capacity to chance. Take the steps to enhance the effectiveness of your key board volunteer leaders. Many boards are stuck in operational issues, managing events and other projects for the membership, while few are vigilant about the future sustainability of the organization. These sessions will provide capacity and skill building for officers to strengthen and foster their confidence in their roles as facilitators, leaders and interveners as well as make them more knowledgable on group process.
Take advantage of a full day of training or choose to attend the morning or afternoon session. These two workshops, offered as a one-day program, are not fashioned after ASAE’s CEO to CEO event. Capacity-building in governance is a matter of survival for many organizations. Attend these important workshops and create the foundation for your organization’s future success.
Brought to you through a strategic partnership between the Michigan Society of Association Executives (MSAE) and Association Management Resources (AMR).

Board Succession Planning Workshop
Traditional practice by a nominating committee sets short-term recruitment goals with little energy dedicated to the long-term strategic leadership path of the organization. In today’s environment, nominating committee results impact:
- Sustainability for the organization
- Follow-through on a strategic path
- Strength and credibility of the organization with the membership and external audiences
- Results that make a public statement about morale in your profession or industry
Both elected and appointed boards need to consider how to maintain quality board membership that will allow the organization to sustain a practice of good governance, which opens the door to operational innovation and functioning at high-performance levels.
The association environment is calling for strategic solutions to developing board leadership. In Board Succession Planning, relevant to the work and concerns of the board chairman, chairman-elect and nominating committee, we will focus on how to build a system for succession planning that will result in the strong leadership required for adaptable, nimble and flexible 21st century associations. Your leaders will come to understand the importance and the “how to’s” of creating a pipeline of leadership that can be tapped for strategic nominations to the board.
12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Lunch (for full day registrants)
1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Chairman and Chairman-Elect Workshop
Facilitating a board meeting well is not an easy process. Moderating and collaborating with a board of volunteers is a unique experience. This workshop will build capacity and confidence in your volunteer leaders.
Does your board leadership make any distinction between being a “working board” to being a “governing board”? Are your current chairman and chairman-elect comfortable with facilitating discussion? Are your board members ready to lead the organization with finesse and purpose? Are your current and incoming chairmen ready to run efficient and effective meetings that engage the whole board in assessing and preparing for the future?
If you answered ‘no’ to any of these questions, then your current and incoming officers should attend this workshop. Participants in the workshop will:
1. Know and demonstrate the difference between governing and managing
2. Learn skills to facilitate a board meeting well
3. Understand how to construct a meaningful agenda
4. Have choices to “orchestrate” discussion on tough issues
5. Acquire information to address their own dilemmas
6. Gain tools to handle unique board situations and members
Workshop presentation and discussion will focus on the role and duties of the chairman, the rules of engagement, the necessary tools for process facilitation and how to define your governing process.
Attendees will receive a copy of the Chief Governing Officer Handbook at this workshop.

About the Strategic Partnership
In 2008, Diane Dufek, CEO of Association Management Resources in Ann Arbor, determined that the clients of her association management company were in need of capacity-building in governing. Dufek partnered with Sue Radwan, CAE, ARM, MEd, to develop and teach a curriculum that helped to redefine and to improve the governance practiced by many of AMR’s clients. The testimony of those who attended the workshops demonstrated a resounding success and it was clear that other associations would benefit from this style of capacity-building. In 2009, Dufek approached the Michigan Society of Association Executives to offer these two workshops to MSAE members. With the importance and need of these topics, MSAE and AMR have created a strategic partnership to present these capacity-building workshops to members and their volunteer leaders.
