The National Retail Federation, the world's largest retail trade organization, and First Data Corporation released results from a research study of data security and fraud prevention strategies practiced at small to mid-sized retailers.

Key Findings:

• Merchant Understanding of Specific Types of Liability is Mixed…More than 60% are not aware of the additional liabilities.
• Two-thirds of Merchants are Aware of PCI DSS
• Total Merchant PCI DSS Compliance is Less Than Half.  49% of merchants surveyed completed a PCI DSS self-assessment.
• 6 out of 10 Merchants who are Aware of PCI DSS are also Aware of the Annual PCI DSS Requirement
