Is Your Employment Handbook Up-to-Date? Bookmark

An employment handbook is a critical tool for communicating to employees. It provides employees one place to get everything they need to know about their employment. By clearly laying out what the organization expects of them as well as what they can expect from the organization, it lays the groundwork for an open, positive work relationship.

Having a handbook in place isn't all there is to making sure it works as intended. It must be regularly modified to ensure it has the most up-to-date organizational items such as policies. Employment laws are constantly evolving and being interpreted, so keeping handbooks current on legal issues is essential. Having an out-of-date handbook can be as risky as having no handbook at all or even riskier when it comes to defending against legal claims.

The best practice is to review a handbook every year or at the most every two years. Even if a review doesn't lead to any changes, it should be a part of your annual human resources maintenance plan.

MSAE's preferred partner for HR consulting, People Matters, has experience reviewing, writing and rewriting dozens of employment handbooks. If you'd like assistance in tackling this project in 2016, please give us a call!
