The SCOTUS Wayfair vs. South Dakota decision handed down recently means online retailers will be required to collect sales tax from customers in individual states, even if they do not have a physical presence in those states. How does this decision impact associations? If you have a physical product that you are mailing out of state, such as books, you could be subject to sales tax collection and reimbursement.
Joining the team in September 2017, Maryanne Greketis, CMP, CTA is taking MSAE’s educational programming up to a new level. Having been a dues paying member for 12 years, she knows what a member values and needs. And as a lifetime Michigan resident, she knows Michigan well. Maryanne brings over 10 years of experience as a meeting planner for the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. She has immense experience planning and coordinating national educational conferences with 3,000 attendees.
Starting in January of this year, Hanna Featherston joined the MSAE team as our meetings intern. She has already shown leadership in taking on any task and project available. Currently finishing her degree majoring in Recreational and Event Management with a minor in Business Administration at Central Michigan University, her graduation date is set for August 2018.
Every association is different. But no matter who you are or whom you represent, one thing is for certain: there is lot of work to be done.
Whether it’s managing members, raising funds, contending with new rules and regulations, or delivering quality programs that serve your mission, there is only so much that can be done in a given day, week, or year.
And that’s not when you’re trying to hire new employees or keep existing ones, or reduce overhead costs, or stay up to date with new technology and ways of communicating.
Does this sound stressful? Perhaps a bit. But that’s part of the job — managing people, processes, finances, and beyond.
The most successful associations are efficient, tech-savvy, and skilled at communicating with members, sponsors, and their local (and online) communities.
Another trait these associations share: They track employee time.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATIONS DAY 2019 | MARCH 28-29 | WASHINGTON D.C.
American Associations Day is the only legislative fly-in where association professionals like you can connect with Congressional offices and share your story on important association issues. This year our issues will be the value of association meetings to the economy and society along with association tax issues.
This unique opportunity allows you, as an association professional, to create connections with policy-makers that will not only advance the association industry, but your own organization as well. Join MSAE and the Michigan association delegation to attend the ASAE Board reception and network with leaders in our field.
Have you heard about the brand new eMarketplace coming to MSAE?
This eMarketplace will be an online store that provides a one-stop-shop for accessing millions of discounted products and services such as office supplies, promotional merchandise, photo and video equipment, and even payroll and accounting software. Each of these products and services offer better pricing and contract and terms and conditions than our members could likely secure on their own.
Yesterday MSAE and ten other Michigan-based member organizations jointly filed an Amicus Brief on the case of Tessa Motors, Inc. v. Ruth Johnson, in her official
capacity as Secretary of State and Chief Motor Vehicle Administrator, Bill Schuette, in his official capacity as Attorney General, and Rick Snyder, in his official capacity as Governor. The brief states the importance of the issue of maintaining confidential communications between the members and the organization. Addressed in the brief are three core issues:
Ensuring a knowledgeable, professional and successful community is MSAE’s mission and core to our long-term success. Because we are a member-first organization, MSAE has continuously pushed the envelope and experimented with the best means to deliver a unique and enriching experience to all of our members and partners. But in this current era of rapid technological, social and economic change, how we serve our members had to shift to reflect the new realities of our society. After conducting a comprehensive analysis of our organizational structure, program offerings and overall operations, the MSAE Board has approved a “New MSAE”.
